Nominating Committee
All local units elect a nominating committee. It is in your bylaws and must be done. This issue cannot be overlooked or suspended.
Timeline for Nominating Committee
Your local unit bylaws set the time for the election of the nominating committee. This is scheduled to allow enough time to select candidates and announce a slate of officers prior to the meeting at which elections are held.
Article VI: Officers, Section 7 gives each unit details about their nominating committee.

This articles specifies how many members serve on the committee.
o
The committee shall have an odd number of members.
o
The committee should be elected at least one month prior to the election, but can be elected earlier. o
The committee must be elected at a general meeting.
o
The committee elects its own chair
o
The PTA president can not serve on the nominating committee
Nominating committee members should:
o
be experienced on-going leaders as well as new members.
o
be elected on merit, not popularity
o
be aware of importance of assignment
o
have knowledge of PTA goals, purposes and programs
o
have knowledge of potential candidates’ qualifications and abilities
o
be able to give objective consideration to find the best qualified leaders for the PTA
o
be tactful, have integrity and discretion, and be able to keep all deliberations confidential.
Nominating committee duties:
The committee should determine if a candidate fulfills the following:
o
Is a PTA member
o
Is a enthusiastic and supportive of the PTA
o
Has PTA experience
o
Has knowledge of the organization and its role in the school and the community
o
Is able to work with people
o
Is fair and objective
o
Has done a good job with other positions previously held in PTA
Announcing the slate of candidates:
The chair of the committee will read the slate to the PTA at the next general meeting. When the presiding officers calls for nominations from the floor, any additional names can be added to the slate. The election will then be held according to the bylaws.
